Google Fi Unlocks Direct Laptop and Tablet Internet Access

In a quiet but significant update, Google Fi has expanded its service to allow laptops and tablets with eSIM capabilities to connect directly to its network — no phone or hotspot required.

The move, part of Google Fi’s 10th anniversary upgrades, follows the launch of new, more affordable unlimited plans. Now, if you own an eSIM-compatible device like an iPad, Surface Pro, or newer models from Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Asus, you can get online through Google Fi without needing a smartphone intermediary.

Previously, Google’s documentation made it clear that tablets weren’t supported for data-only eSIMs. That policy has been updated — the company’s help page now explicitly states: “Google Fi now supports data-only eSIM for tablets and laptops.”

There’s a catch: this functionality is only available to customers on the Flexible or Unlimited Premium plans. Those on the more budget-friendly Unlimited Standard or Essentials plans will not be able to add a data-only SIM.

For eligible users, the new capability comes with no extra charge and works seamlessly across more than 200 countries. However, it’s important to note that the service is intended solely for direct internet access — tethering or hotspot sharing isn’t supported yet.

In short, Google Fi just made staying connected on the move much simpler, especially for remote workers and frequent travelers who need reliable internet without juggling multiple devices.
