In a major reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft and Asus officially announced their first co-branded handheld gaming PCs, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
These devices mark a significant leap for Xbox’s hardware ecosystem, integrating console-style design with the power of portable PC gaming. Built in partnership with Asus, the new handhelds leverage the advanced features of the ROG Ally line while embracing signature Xbox functionality.
Two Models Coming in 2025
Microsoft and Asus confirmed that both the ROG Xbox Ally and the premium ROG Xbox Ally X will be available before the end of the year. While specific release dates and pricing are still under wraps, each model caters to different levels of gamers.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the flagship version, boasting cutting-edge specs including:
- AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor
- 24GB LPDDR5X RAM
- 1TB storage
- 7-inch Full HD display (120Hz, 500 nits)
- Massive 80Wh battery
- USB4 and USB-C ports
This configuration aims to deliver high-end portable gaming performance. Asus claims battery life outpaces most competitors, citing over 2.5 hours of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay in testing.
Meanwhile, the base ROG Xbox Ally offers:
- AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor
- 16GB RAM
- 512GB storage
- 60Wh battery
- Dual USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports
Both models maintain the same dimensions, with weight differing slightly: 715g for the Ally X and 670g for the standard Ally.
Xbox-Inspired Design and Features
Microsoft emphasized the collaborative design process, aiming to deliver a console-like experience in a portable format. Key Xbox-inspired additions include:
- Contoured grips modeled after Xbox Wireless Controllers
- Impulse triggers for immersive control
- Dedicated Xbox button for quick access to the dashboard
