Huawei is taking a bold step toward technological independence with the unveiling of its first-ever laptop powered by HarmonyOS Next, the company’s proprietary operating system. The device is set to launch officially on May 19, 2025, signaling Huawei’s move away from Microsoft’s Windows ecosystem following the loss of its license to use the platform.
While details remain limited, early reports suggest that HarmonyOS Next—also referred to as HarmonyOS 5—will support both native desktop applications and select mobile apps. The interface is described as a visual hybrid, blending macOS-style elegance with Windows-like familiarity and mobile-centric design elements.
The laptop will debut with Huawei’s in-house AI assistant, Celia, offering productivity-focused features such as document summarization, presentation creation, and intelligent local search. The system is pre-loaded with a suite of Chinese-developed applications including the WPS Office suite, Alibaba’s DingTalk collaboration platform, and popular social and media apps such as RedNote, Bilibili, and ByteDance’s Feishu.
According to Huawei, over 2,000 apps will be compatible with HarmonyOS Next by the end of 2025. The laptop itself reportedly resembles the MateBook X Pro in design, featuring a minimalist chassis, three USB-C ports, and HarmonyOS branding on the lid.
HarmonyOS originated as a mobile OS following Huawei’s split from Android. With increasing software restrictions, Huawei has accelerated efforts to create a seamless cross-platform ecosystem—HarmonyOS Next is its most ambitious push yet into the PC market.
More technical details and pricing are expected to be revealed during the official launch event later this month.
