ST Unveils Human Presence Detection Tech for PCs

STMicroelectronics has introduced an advanced Human Presence Detection (HPD) system aimed at significantly improving energy efficiency, security, and user experience across laptops, PCs, and related accessories. By fusing its FlightSense™ Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors with AI algorithms, the semiconductor giant continues to lead innovation in consumer electronics.

Energy Savings and Enhanced User Privacy

The new HPD solution enables hands-free Windows Hello authentication, automatic screen dimming, and walk-away locking—all while cutting daily power consumption by over 20%. The system intelligently dims the screen when the user isn’t looking and wakes up the device when the user returns, thanks to its adaptive AI-based features.

According to Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive VP at STMicroelectronics, “Our latest HPD solution reflects our commitment to energy-efficient, secure, and intuitive computing. We’re helping redefine how people interact with devices.”

Multi-Zone ToF Sensing Meets AI

At the heart of this solution is the VL53L8CP, ST’s 5th-generation FlightSense 8×8 multi-zone ToF sensor. It powers a suite of intelligent features including:

  • Multi-person detection to safeguard privacy
  • Head orientation tracking for dynamic screen control
  • Gesture recognition and posture analysis to support wellness and productivity

These capabilities are embedded within a compact module that works without capturing images, ensuring maximum user privacy.

Proven Performance and Market Impact

ST has already integrated its FlightSense technology into over 260 laptop and PC models, proving the system’s commercial viability. In 2024 alone, ToF modules generated $2.2 billion in revenue, with projections expected to grow to $3.8 billion by 2030, reflecting a CAGR of 9.5%.

The company’s data-driven development process—relying on global datasets and continuous AI training—has enabled ST to convert complex Proof-of-Concepts into high-performance mass-market solutions.

Designed for Seamless Integration

The HPD system is fully compatible with existing PC sensor hubs, allowing OEMs to integrate it without additional engineering work. The solution offers low-power operation, advanced filtering to avoid false triggers, and a plug-and-play hardware-software package that accelerates deployment.

Toward a Greener, Smarter Future

STMicroelectronics continues to advance its sustainability goals, targeting 100% renewable electricity usage by 2027 and aiming for carbon neutrality across its global operations. With innovations like HPD, the company demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can drive both performance and environmental responsibility.
