Framework Laptop 12 pre-orders open April 9th, price awaited soon

Framework, the company championing user-repairable and upgradeable laptops, is preparing to open pre-orders for its newest and most budget-conscious model, the Framework Laptop 12, starting next week on April 9th, 2025. This marks the company’s first venture into the 2-in-1 convertible space and a direct challenge to the often criticized low-cost “craptop” segment.

Announced last month, the Laptop 12 aims to bring Framework’s core principles of sustainability and user empowerment to a more accessible market segment. Unlike its premium Laptop 13 sibling, the 12-inch model features a vibrant TPU/ABS plastic casing available in multiple colors (blue, pink, green, silver, black) alongside the signature modular port system allowing users to swap connections like USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, or card readers.

Designed as a convertible, the Laptop 12 boasts a 12-inch touchscreen with stylus compatibility, offering flexibility between traditional laptop use and tablet-like interaction. While described as slightly “chunkier” than the existing Framework designs – likely a concession for affordability – it retains the brand’s commitment to internal access. Users will be able to easily upgrade or replace components like the motherboard (featuring Intel 13th-gen i3 or i5 options), RAM (up to 48GB), and M.2 storage (up to 2TB) using just a screwdriver. Buyers will also have a choice between Windows and Linux operating systems.

Framework CEO Nirav Patel has positioned the Laptop 12 squarely against what he described as the “janky, locked-down, disposable, underpowered, and frankly, boring machines” often found in the budget category. By offering a repairable and potentially longer-lasting alternative, Framework hopes to attract buyers frustrated with the throwaway nature of many inexpensive laptops.

However, the most critical detail remains unknown: the price. For the Laptop 12 to successfully penetrate the budget market, its cost will be paramount. While Framework aims for affordability, bridging the gap between typical sub-$500 budget laptops and the potentially higher cost of its modular, repairable design presents a significant challenge. Industry watchers suggest a price point around $750 might be necessary for it to be competitive, but official pricing will only be revealed when pre-orders open on April 9th.

Following the pre-order launch next week, Framework has indicated a general shipping timeframe of mid-2025 for the Laptop 12. Until the price is announced, potential customers in the budget-conscious market will be eagerly waiting to see if this repairable alternative truly fits their wallet.
