Gaming Fuels Acer’s Lead in Cooling Philippine Laptop Market

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Acer cemented its position as the leading laptop brand in the Philippines for 2024, capturing over a third of the market despite a continued cooling trend in overall laptop sales, according to recent data from market research firm GfK.

The Taiwanese technology firm secured a commanding 35.7% share of the combined consumer and gaming notebook market. This success comes even as the broader Philippine laptop market saw a decline, shrinking to 785,883 units sold in 2024, down from 824,244 in 2023 and nearly a million units in 2022. The market appears to be normalizing towards levels seen just before the pandemic-induced surge of 2021, which saw over 1.1 million units sold due to widespread shifts to remote work and online learning.

A significant driver of Acer’s dominance was its remarkable performance in the gaming laptop segment – a category that has bucked the overall downward trend. While the general market contracted, gaming laptop sales continued their upward trajectory, growing from 172,590 units in 2023 to 186,237 units in 2024. Acer was the clear leader here, capturing a 40.7% market share, meaning roughly two out of every five gaming laptops sold in the country bore the Acer brand. This represents Acer’s strongest performance in this category since 2020. The brand also held a strong 34.2% share in the consumer notebook category, also its highest since 2020.

Industry analysts attribute Acer’s success partly to the popularity and strategic marketing of its Predator gaming line. Acer Philippines has actively cultivated the local esports scene through events like the Asia Pacific Predator League and sponsorships, building significant brand loyalty among gamers.

“These initiatives have built stronger brand equity, resulting in customers recognizing and trusting Acer and its products,” stated Sue Ong-Lim, Acer Philippines Managing Director. She added, “For 2025 and beyond, our consumers can only expect the best of what we can offer.”

Beyond gaming, Acer’s extensive nationwide footprint, encompassing concept stores, authorized dealers, and prominent placement on major e-commerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee, ensures wide accessibility for consumers, further bolstering its market lead.

While the Philippine market saw a decline, separate data from tracker IDC indicated a slight global recovery, with worldwide PC shipments reaching 262.7 million units in 2024, a 1% increase from the previous year. Acer’s strong showing in the Philippines highlights its effective strategy in navigating shifting consumer demands, particularly the sustained boom in PC gaming.
